Social Bookmarking Service Websites
A social bookmarking service is a type of website which links to other webpages which have been recommended by its members. They can be used to find interesting webpages you might have otherwise overlooked, help promote your own website, or encourage people to visit webpages you agree with or find interesting. A number of major websites, including MercuryNews.com and AssociatedContent.com, use social bookmarking icons so that users can easily recommend articles. The following is a set of brief overviews on the major social bookmarking service websites, including details on their features and popularity…
DIGG: One of the most well-known social bookmarking websites, Digg.com lets users recommend news articles, videos, and podcasts on a variety of subjects. Each recommendation is counted as a “digg”, and content with the most “diggs” appears on the front page. The registration form is not very long (only five questions). The Digg social bookmarking service has an Alexa.com traffic ranking of 96 (out of millions of websites) and a Google PageRank of eight (out of ten), so it provides major potential for increasing a website’s traffic.
DEL.ICIO.US: Although Del.icio.us works similarly to Digg, it appears to be less news-oriented, with a wider variety of topics featured. Unlike Reddit and Digg, it shows a small thumbnail image of each recommended webpage next to the title and tag information. This social bookmarking service has an Alexa traffic rank of 216, and a Google PageRank of eight.
REDDIT: A social bookmarking service mostly focused upon news, science, and computer software/programming websites, Reddit has a largely text-based design. This service has an even shorter registration form than the others, with only a username and password required. Reddit has an Alexa traffic ranking of 839 (not as impressive as Digg or Del.icio.us, but better than the vast majority of websites) and a Google PageRank of seven.
STUMBLEUPON: Recently acquired by eBay, StumbleUpon asks that members download a web browser toolbar add-on which allows them to recommend websites and “channel surf” already-recommended websites. Versions of the toolbar are available for Internet Explorer and FireFox. Without the toolbar, anyone can browse StumbleUpon’s site for recommended bookmarks. Like del.icio.us, it features thumbnail webpage images and links on a wide variety of topics. StumbleUpon has an Alexa ranking of 320 and a PageRank of eight.
Other websites with social bookmarking services include Netscape.com (news articles with the most “votes” and positive ratings appear on the front page) and Yahoo, which as a beta bookmarking service called “MyWeb” on their website.
